My father and I stayed in the Yorkshire Hotel & Spa in Phuket for 7 nights in August 2011. We chose here because the location was second to none. Right in the heart of Phuket, we were a 30 second walk from Bangla Road and a minute from Jungceylon Shopping Mall.
We arrived tired from our trip from Krabi up to Phuket. The staff were helpful and spoke good English. We had booked the rooms together but were given a room on seperate floors, but that isn’t a big issue. We asked if they could hold our valuables behind reception (passport, money for remaining days) and they obliged. This service was great, like a room safe but better.
Our rooms had a double bed and small ensuite (western toilet), just enough for what you need. The air con is a God send too. The facilities were good too, with a pool and sauna, restaurant, pool bar and computers with free internet near reception.
At the time we paid a very low price, something along the lines of £15 per night. I think this is great value for what you get, and seemed to be the cheapest 3 star accommodation near Phuket centre. The only issue we had was when we bought food (English menu) or drink from the bar. There was a 10% optional service charge added to everything and to have it removed was a rigmarole. We didn’t bother at first, because the service was well worth 10% and the prices are reasonable anyway.
One morning though, purely out of principle, we had breakfast and asked for it to be removed. With a disappointed glance the lady walked away and came back 5 minutes later with the 10% off. It seems like a tactic to catch holiday makers (usually big spenders) out and even play on some peoples’ embarassment to make them not say anything.
I would have been so much more infuriated if the service wasn’t 100% all of the time. The rooms were always spotless, the staff couldn’t do enough for you and they are what really made our stay so enjoyable. The largest service charge came upon check out, when we were to settle our bill. We had both decided before checking out that we would pay it, as they definitely deserved it.
Overall, I would recommend staying at the Yorkshire if you want to be in the ‘action’ of Phuket. It is a fantastic hotel providing the best value for money in the area and if I were to return to Phuket I would stay again.
